What's the difference between AEP and OEP?

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the enrollment period when anyone who is eligible for Medicare can make changes to their existing coverage, such as enrolling, dis-enrolling, or changing their Medicare Advantage coverage or Part D Prescription Drug Plan coverage. AEP occurs each year from October 15 to December 7, and coverage begins on January 1 of the following year.

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. Coverage begins on the first day of the month after the month you enroll. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you will have a one-time opportunity to:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
  • Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare, Part A, and Part B
  • Sign up for a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan (if you return to Original Medicare)
